News broke yesterday that President Obama plans to generate an executive order to fund embryonic stem cell research.  This would effectively increase the Bush administration's policy regarding funding for embryonic stem cell research.  The press is of course delighted and referring to it as "lifting the ban on stem cell research" -- a phrase which is deceitful and inaccurate.

President Bush was the first president to federally fund research on embryonic stem cells.  (In the opinion of this blogger, any research that includes the destruction of human life is morally wrong.)  The parameters included only working on stem cells created by the destruction of human embryos prior to August 9, 2001.

In addition to funding embryonic stem cell research, the Bush administration funded loads of research using adult stem cells, including cord blood stem cell research.  This research has proved to be very promising and effective at treating actual conditions and diseases -- over seventy five to date.  And even though adult stem cells are already treating conditions like Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart disease and spinal cord injuries without destroying human embryos, the press is still reporting that "Scientists believe [embryonic stem cell] research could eventually produce cures for a variety of diseases, including Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart disease and spinal cord injuries."

Obama's executive order will likely encourage the destruction of nascent human life using our taxpayer dollars.
