In what could be her final days as governor of Kansas, Kathleen Sebelius vetoed a bill that would have amended Kansas law to further restrict the disgusting procedure of partial-birth abortion. Senate Bill 218, the 2009 Late-Term and Partial-Birth Abortion Regulation Act, contained three critical provisions to aid women in a time of crisis.

1. The bill would have required abortion providers to report a medical diagnosis that showed the mother's life was in danger if she continued her pregnancy. Had the bill passed, the "mental health" of the mother would no longer be a valid reason for the abortion of a viable baby.

2. The bill would have given women to ability to sue abortion providers if they later discovered the abortion was illegal or done illegally.

3. The bill would have updated the informed consent language given to mothers 24 hours before the abortion to say, "the abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique living human being."

The veto comes at a critical point in time for Sebelius who faces a confirmation vote in the full Senate in the coming days. By rejecting this bill, Sebelius makes a statement about where she stands - with the abortion industry. Defending late-term abortionists at the expense of what is best for women is not what Americans want to see in HHS.

In fact, one Kansas woman implored Sebelius to sign the bill because its protections would have greatly benefited women just like her: women who have late-term abortions. Michelle Armesto-Berge was taken by her parents to George Tiller's clinic when she was a senior in high school. Her tragic experience lead her to speak up in support for the bill, which Sebelius later rejected. You can read Michelle's story and her impassioned appeal to Kathleen Sebelius here.
