The sole abortion business in North Dakota, Red River Women’s Clinic, has filed an injunction against a law that would require that women be given the opportunity to see an ultrasound and hear a fetal heartbeat 24 hours before their abortion. The law is scheduled to go into effect on August 1st, but the abortion facility director is seeking to delay the law’s enactment due to what she terms “vague and confusing” language. One of the main portions of the law under contention is concerning the language of the requirement of providing an opportunity to hear a fetal heartbeat. The law states, “…the fetal heart tone must be of a quality consistent with standard medical practice in the community,” a provision that the Red River Women’s Clinic says will limit the number of abortions due to the cost of the equipment that would supposedly be necessary to produce such a heartbeat.
One must wonder why a clinic that supposedly has women’s best interests at heart would be so aggressive in fighting a law that requires that women have the opportunity to be fully informed. Considering that simply viewing an ultrasound has a significant impact on whether a woman chooses abortion or not, you would think that an ultrasound would be something that a pro-woman organization would advocate, even if it slightly increased costs. After all, who would want a woman to see a similar ultrasound after her abortion and realize that she had made the wrong decision?
No one who is truly concerned about women would value the number of abortions more than the quality of medical care. It’s very clear that the Red River Women’s Clinic is more concerned about the money than they are about women.
