Is it clear now? Americans know that abortion is NOT health care! Rasmussen Reports released a new poll just this morning, confirming what SBA List activists, many members of Congress, and pro-lifers around the country already know—the majority of Americans do not support an abortion mandate in health care. Essentially, abortion in health care is a losing issue for President Obama and congressional leadership—if only they would listen!

Rasmussen Reports show that 48% of Americans believe that “any government-subsidized health care plan should be prohibited from covering abortion procedures.”  This is in stark contrast to the measly 13% who believe any government health care plan should be required to provide abortion services. Among people that already oppose the current health care reform plans, 72% believe abortion coverage should be prohibited. Clearly, the American people have decided. Explicitly exclude abortion coverage from health care reform or Americans cannot accept it.

Today, SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser reiterated,

“If the Congressional leadership and the President fall on the sword of abortion coverage, pleasing their allies and weaving it into the fabric of our daily lives, they do so at the peril of the entire bill and their own political futures.”

Just as last week’s Susan B. Anthony List poll was evidence of the growing pro-life sentiment among the American public, so the Rasmussen Poll echoes what we have been hearing all summer and since the election of President Obama: the majority of Americans are pro-life! The discussion of mandated abortion coverage in health care flies in the face of the values of many Americans—58% of which believe (according to Rasmussen) abortion is morally wrong most of the time. When will the President and our leaders in Congress get it?

If you’re going to be in Washington D.C. today through Saturday for the Values Voter Summit, make sure to stop by the Susan B. Anthony List booth to pick up a sticker that says it all, “Abortion is NOT health care!”
