Re: Man Kills Pregnant Woman After She Refuses to Have an Abortion

I remember when abortions were illegal. I remember the horror stories on the news about dead women found in allies, or worse their well appointed bedrooms in the wealthy father's house, because they used a coat hanger out of ignorance or they paid an exortionate amount of money to a woman or man who promised to "take care" of the problem.
Also remember that at that time, a single woman with a baby was treated like a whore, because in the minds of many that's all she was. People would literally cross the street rather than pass by such a woman. And no "respectable" woman would have been allowed to keep such a woman as her friend. Her father, mother, sisters, brothers and /or husband all would have demanded she drop the "unfortunate" like a hot rock.
Additionally, abortion has been practiced one way or another essentially since we started walking upright. Archeologists have found abortaficants in the rooms of wealthy Egyptian women from thousands of years ago. The ancient Greeks were known to have abortions when "necessary".
For myself, I did not choose abortion. I gave my child up for adoption. My sister did choose abortion. And the strange thing is that now she is pro life while I am pro choice. I am pro choice because you cannot stop the wind. You cannot stop the tide. If we truly wanted to end abortions, we would actively make ALL OTHER options more attractive than abortion.
You can outlaw abortion, but history proves that such a law will not put a stop to it. We need to provide women with viable options for any circumstance. The fact that any woman would choose an abortion in a society where single mothers are welcome and supported, where babies of all kinds can find adoptive families, and where profylactics are sold at the register of the local 7/11 is a commentary on our society and the values we teach our children.
The man who killed her obviously saw a higher reward in eliminating her and the child than in allowing the child to be born. I would bet that all he saw when he looked at her, was his paycheck going out the window in child support for the rest of his life. These are the problems that need to be solved. Passing a law to outlaw abortion will be as effective as Prohibition was at outlawing alchohol. And wasting time on it is just that. A waste of time.
